Victoria is a beautiful and vibrant place to live. Whether you are relocating for work or simply seeking a change of scenery, moving to Victoria can be an exciting and fulfilling experience. However, before you pack your bags and hit the road, there are a few things you should consider and prepare for to make your transition as smooth as possible.

  • Register for BC Health Insurance (MSP). https://my.gov.bc.ca/msp/enrolment
  • Get your mail forwarded through Canada Post
  • Change your address at – your bank, cell phone provider, etc.
  • Exchange your driver’s licence or get a BC ID card. Go to an ICBC office to do this. See more on our Driver’s licence page
  • If you have kids, register them for school and daycare or childcare provider: The school district needs your purchase agreement of your new home, or they will need some sort of documentation proving you live there.
  • Register for child benefits: You receive monthly payments for each child from the BC and Federal Governments. Here’s how it works in the “Child Benefits” section.
  • Parking Permits: If your street needs them, register online with the City of Victoria, to give them your license plate number. This will prevent your car from being towed for illegal parking. https://www.victoria.ca/EN/main/residents/parking/residential-parking.html
  • Sign up for all services at your new home: BC Hydro (electricity), Fortis BC (natural gas if you have it) also phone, cable and internet.
  • Find a new Doctor and Dentist
  • Find a new hairstylist / hair salon
  • Get a library card to your local library

Documents to update and bring with you:

• Birth Certificate / Certificate of Citizenship
Valid Driver’s Licence
• Drivers Abstract or Record: To obtain an unrestricted driver’s license, you will need to provide a document that lists your driver’s license history and demonstrates that you have held a valid license for at least two years. Additionally, if you have a clean driving record, you may be eligible for a discount at ICBC, so it’s important to remember to bring this document with you when applying for your license.

• Marriage / Divorce Certificate
• SIN card and Passport
• Bring your car title and insurance papers if you are bringing a vehicle.
