BC’s Indigenous Roots

The City of Victoria is situated on the unceded territory of the Lekwungen, W̱SÁNEĆ, Songhees and Esquimalt First Nations.

It is important to acknowledge and recognize the fact that the land on which Victoria is built was never ceded, or surrendered, through treaty or other means. The first nations have a deep spiritual and cultural connection to the land and its resources, and their presence on the territory predates European contact.

It is important for the City of Victoria, its residents, and visitors to be aware of and respectful of the history of the first nations on the land. This means acknowledging and respecting the Indigenous perspective and seeking to learn more about the rich cultural heritage of the area. It also means supporting reconciliation efforts and working towards a more equitable and respectful relationship between Indigenous peoples and non-Indigenous peoples.
